Folks-

Presentation Schedule
Folks-
If you missed class on Wednesday, please download a copy of the presentation schedule to the right. It is your responsibility to know what day you are presenting next week!
Final Exam Schedule
Folks-
Here is a link to the final exam schedule for BCC. Our final class period during this time is Friday May 7th from 8am-950am.
The Very Large Grammar-Writing Handout!
Folks-
Wow, grammar is over! We are moving into the homestretch of the class. Before we continue, I thought it was time to share with you the grammar writing handout I have worked on the past few semesters. Because it is so long, I will only be sharing the PDF with you. Print it at your discretion. Enjoy! You will find the handout linked on the sidebar.
Final Quiz Average
Folks-
I forgot to mention this at the end of class. The number at the bottom of the quiz I gave back today (quiz=______) is your final quiz average. Sorry!

Argumentation Revisions
Folks-
I have finished grading your argumentation papers. Those of you who wish to do a revision should get it into me by the weekend. Thanks!
Problems With Papers: Argumentation Edition!
Folks-
A few concerns with your argumentation papers:
- Each entry from the argument pair in Subject & Strategy gets a separate works cited entry.
- Make sure you refresh yourself on the correct way to do block quotes.
- Never, never, ever use phrases like “I totally agree” or “in my opinion,” you will end up sounding apologetic for your views!
- Make sure you are following the requirements set forth on paper handouts.
- Again, do not refer to the authors of books/articles/etc by their first name…and…
- This isn’t the New York Times, therefore you don’t have to call people you reference Mr., Ms., or Mrs.
Office Hours Today=Cancelled
Folks-
I apologize, but I need to cancel office hours today. I am need to be somewhere back in Ocean County by 11am. We will still have EOffice hours tonight from 8pm-10pm.
Plagiarism Tutorials
Folks-
Lauren Pressley, a librarian friend of mine, recently put together a nice post chronicling a number of plagiarism tutorials you might want to check out if you are still having trouble with citation.
Extending The Argument
Folks-
After some deliberation, I have decided to extend the deadline for the argumentation paper until Sunday evening. The class is working very hard and a few more days will give you time to put in your best effort.
Please get your papers in to my email by midnight on Sunday evening/Monday morning.
Google Docs
If you have a Google account, your Google Docs account now accepts any kind of file. Might be a useful alternative for storage/backup/etc.
Five Websites Undergrads Need To Know
Prof Hacker on five websites undergrads need to know. Some useful links in this post.
Digital Natives (Or Not?!?!?)
Folks-
Some spring break food for thought about the web savvy skills, or lack thereof, of the current generation:
Even when controlling for basic Internet access, among a group of young adults, socioeconomic status is an important predictor of how people are incorporating the Web into their everyday lives with those from more privileged backgrounds using it in more informed ways for a larger number of activities.
“Experts” On Cable News
Folks-
Here is the piece from Democracy Now! about cable news channels failure to disclose the lobbying ties of their experts. We discussed this during our lecture on argumentation.
Skype
Folks-
A few students have recently asked whether I use Skype at all. I do and have set up an account specifically to speak with students. My user name not surprisingly is professorwend@gmail.com
I will sign on during EOffice hours and by appointment.
Remember The Milk
Folks-
Awhile back, a few of you asked about task management programs like Remember The Milk. I promised to get a little more information and, conveniently, Prof Hacker recently blogged about it.
Paper #2 Revisions
Folks-
As we discussed in class, revisions for paper #2 will be due by the time we leave for spring break. I have amended our schedule to reflect this addition.
Public Safety/ICE
Folks-
This posted isn’t related to English, but it is almost as important. My friend over at Prof Hacker recently posted about adding campus security and an ICE (In Case of Emergency) listing to your cell phone. In case of emergencies in the classroom, or on campus, it is important to be as prepared as possible. Adding these numbers to your phone takes a few minutes and could save a life one day.
Problems With Papers #2
Folks-
I am almost done grading your second paper. They are, generally, pretty good but here are some concerns I have:
- Names-Do not refer to the authors by their first name. Refer to them by their last name. For some reason, this seems to be especially prevalent when dealing with female authors.
- Do not open or end a paragraph with a quote. Remember back to our class discussion: introduce it somehow and then add the quote.
- Make sure you are doing a works cited page! I am taking points off for failing to add this.
The Argumentation Paper
Folks-
Due to the inclement weather and cancellation of classes on Friday, I was not able to submit the argumentation paper handout to be printed. I am putting it up on our website for you to check out a few days early. I will not have copies with me in class on Monday, but I will go over it with you then. I will pick up print copies during my office hours and have them then if you’d like to pick one up. I will also bring print copies on Wednesday to class.
On Monday and Wednesday we will discuss argumentation.
Today
Folks-
As you’ve no doubt heard, today’s class is cancelled. Here’s the plan: keep working on your papers and still submit them to me tonight. I will try to do “EOffice” hours for most of today. I look forward to reading your chapter three papers. I will give out the annotated bibliography project handout on Monday.
Library Day!
Folks-
I spoke to the director of the ILRC this afternoon and confirmed us for next Friday, March 5th, in the ILRC. I think we should meet in the waiting area once you go through the revolving door. The presentation will focus on database and Internet research. I have updated our schedule accordingly.
Process Analysis Revisions
Folks-
Your process analysis papers have been returned to you. If you are doing a revision, please submit it by this Friday the 19th. Thanks!
Problems With Papers
Folks-
Your rough drafts have been well done so far. Here are a few issues I have noted:
- Make sure you are double spacing for your final draft
- Any number above ten should be written as a number (45, 455326, etc)
- Make sure you are inserting page #’s in the top right corner. We will briefly go over this on Friday in the lab
Schedule Additions/Corrections
Folks-
I have ammended our schedule for the sake of clarity. I noticed this morning a few assignments, particularly in the grammar section, did not have due dates noted. I have corrected that now for the following:
- Annotated Bibliography Project (3-12)
- Grammar Refresher #1 (3-31)
- Grammar Refresher #2 (4-7)
- Grammar Exam Review (4-12)
